PROJECT
DESCRIPTION - TARRACE
Brochure Download
OBJECTIVES
The objective of the project
is to attract approximately 100 motor-vehicle teams to drive across
Africa to highlight a peaceful and harmonious co-existence in
Africa. Additionally, each team will sponsor an equal number of
local African grass-roots non-governmental organizations to highlight
their work and to seek the race prize-money for their benefit
organization.
The team with the shortest total race time will be declared the
winner and will receive the prize money for their team and for
the benefit organization. There will also be tiered prizes for
subsequent finishers in various categories. Additionally, rally
teams may obtain specific donations for their particular benefit
organizations.
Also, there will be a second local country participation category
(of approximately 50 teams for each country) which will consist
of local drivers who will also sponsor particular local non-governmental
organizations to highlight and vie for prize money for their activities.
METHODS
How- The African Cultural Exchange
will conduct a road rally across the continent of Africa in conjunction
with its various sponsors. The Participants Teams will come from
two categories and consist of 2 drivers each with vehicles from
4 different classes. The Categories of rally teams will be A)
International-consisting of drivers who will participate in the
entire race and B) Local Country Drivers-consisting of drivers
from a specific country who will participate from border to border
within their respective countries.
When- The TARRACE will take place during the month of December
each year from the first Saturday of December (or the last Saturday
of November) to the first of January and will require approximately
30 days to complete.
Why-This activity is specifically designed as a fundraiser for
The African Cultural Exchange and for the benefit organizations
as well as a method of demonstrating for peace and harmony in
Africa. We propose that this potentially influential activity
will provide a platform for highlighting some of the problems
in Africa and for inspiring potential solutions by providing for
support of some of the local grassroots organizations.
We believe that the media exposure created by this activity along
with for instance having school groups from around the world follow
their chosen teams via global positioning and the internet will
further spotlight the peace and harmony aims of the TARRACE
STAFFING/ADMINISTRATION
The TARRACE will be staffed
by the existing ACE staff along with personnel hired to specifically
fill the required administrative and operational positions to
conduct the activity.
The new positions will include a financial staff, operational
staff and administrative staff. Additionally, staff will be required
in each country which will be required for manning check-points
and for other administrative duties within each country.
EVALUATION
The success of the TARRACE
will be evaluated based upon three main objectives: 1). number
of participants and the number that complete the race. 2). the
number beneficiary organizations 3). The number of sponsors and
the amount of money raised.
The other main purpose of the project- to promote peace and harmony
in Africa- is admittedly very nebulous and would be extremely
difficult to evaluate. We would consider this purpose to be met
if three measurable objectives are met: 1). If the race is completed
by the majority of participants with minimal or no military or
security problems, 2). If the international media report on the
race and highlight some of the difficulties of the communities
and people encountered along the way, including their security
issues, 3) if the TARRACE is sustained to the next year providing
a platform for readdress of some of the issues encountered.
Other evaluation tools will be developed as suggested by sponsors,
participants, beneficiaries, and other interested parties as the
activity is undertaken.
SUSTAINABILITY
This activity has the objective
of being self-supporting and self-sustaining. The initial implementation
of the road rally may require contributions from the donor community,
however, it is expected that each team will generate its own funding
from multiple sources through advertisement and team sponsorship.
Currently, the organization and its activities are supported by
fundraisers and donations from the general public.
